Rita Bowen, MA, RHIA, CHPS, CHPC, SSGB

As Vice President of Privacy, Compliance and HIM Policy, Bowen ensures all client, HIM policies and procedures are to code. She also serves as the Privacy and Compliance Officer (PCO), assuring timely reporting of any disclosure incident and compliance with regulatory rules. A key component of her role is reviewing legislation to assure industry response and compliance within MRO. Bowen has held a variety of HIM roles including enterprise director, consultant, and educator. Bowen is an established author and specialist on HIM topics. Bowen currently sits on The Sequoia Project Board of Directors and is an active member of the Interoperability Work Group. She is a member of the Confidenti Coalition that works closely with key legislators and regulators to ensure that privacy legislation and regulation do not impede efforts to provide safe, high quality, and coordinated healthcare. Bowen also serves as the Legislative Chair for AHIOS, the Association of Health Information Outsourcing Services. She remains a member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and has served as AHIMA President and Board Chair in the past. Bowen has also served on the AHIMA Foundation Board of Directors and served as its Board Chair. She has been honored w AHIMA’s Triumph Award in the mentor category; she is also the recipient of the Distinguished Member Award from the Tennessee Health Information Management Association (THIMA). Bowen holds a Bachelor of Medical Science degree from Emo University in Atlanta, GA with a focus in medical record administration and a master’ degree in Health Information/Informatics Management Technology from the College of Saint Scholastic in Duluth, MN.
