FY 2021 ICD-10 Updates

Overview:

There are substantial code updates for 2021. This presentation will consist of ICD-10-PCS (2 CEU) and ICD-10-CM (2 CEU).

ICD-10-CM Part 1 & 2 Updates
Ann Zeisset, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P

ICD-10-CM has 490 new codes, 47 code revisions and 58 deleted codes in 17 chapters. Guideline changes will be highlighted, including the new COVID-19 guidelines that will be effective on Oct. 1, 2020. Chapters with the most updates include Chapter 19 (128), Chapter 20 (125), and musculoskeletal (50). There has been an expansion in sickle cell disorder codes, withdrawal codes for alcohol and other substances for use and abuse coding, and laterality for corneal disorders. In addition to just a discussion about the new codes, clinical detail will be provided using the Coordination & Maintenance Committee meeting materials.

ICD-10-PCS Part 1 & 2 Updates

ICD-10-PCS has 544 new codes, 0 revised titles and 0 deleted codes with a total of 78,103 codes.  Actually due to the implementation of the 12 new ICD-10-PCS codes for COVID-19 treatments, this adds an additional 12 codes.  These codes were released on July 30, 2020 and go into effect August 1, 2020.  They are placed into New Technology and use the Group year 5, and are updates to 2020 codes.  These new codes will be discussed in detail.  In addition, key updates to ICD-10-PCS will be explored including clinical detail about new procedures.  Some of the key changes are additions of device value for radioactive devices, ability to perform left atrium to right atrium shunt, mitral valve repair with transapical approach.  Additions (02F) and new tables for Fragmentation in 03F, 04F, 05F and 06F. Added Value Y for other Devices to Subcutaneous Tissue and Fascia table.  New table for transplantation of scrotum or penis.

Ann has over 35 years’ experience in HIM and coding and is a nationally recognized ICD-10-CM/PCS speaker, author, and educator. Ann is a speaker and author on coding related topics, including CPT, ICD-10-CM, and ICD-10-PCS. Ann is an AHIMA-approved ICD-10-CM/PCS trainer.

Ann Zeisset, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, is an independent consultant on ICD-10-CM/PCS.  In her role she develops, supports and delivers training on ICD-10.  Currently Ms. Zeisset is a contract Educator consultant at YES-HIM Consulting in Largo, FL She also serves as content developer for AHIMA.  Ms. Zeisset is an AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer.

Prior to this, she served twelve years as Manager of Professional Practice Resources for AHIMA. In that role, Ms. Zeisset provided professional expertise to AHIMA members, the media, and outside organizations on coding practice issues. She has authored and served as technical advisor for AHIMA online coding education, publications and articles on ICD-9-CM, CPT, and ICD-10-CM/PCS topics. She has authored or co-authored eleven books and over thirty-five published articles.

Prior to joining AHIMA, Ms. Zeisset served as director of Health Information/Utilization Management. Before that, Ms. Zeisset served in various coding roles, and has been an educator of coding and HIM for more than 25 years at multiple colleges including as adjunct faculty in the Health Information Management Program at the University of Cincinnati. Ms Zeisset has over 35 years’ experience in HIM and coding, and is a nationally-recognized ICD-10-CM/PCS speaker, author, and educator.  Ms. Zeisset completed a one-year contract between the Foundation for Research and Education and CMS to determine potential impacts to CMS when converting from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems. Ms Zeisset also testified for AHIMA before the National Center for Vital and Health Statistics on readiness for ICD-10.  Ms. Zeisset is a frequent author and speaker on CPT and ICD-10-CM/PCS and served as author and faculty for the AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Academies to train trainers.

Ann graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Leadership from Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois and an Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology from Belleville Area College in Belleville, Illinois.  Ann was awarded the Distinguished Member award from SILHIMA in 2003 and the Certified Coding Specialist award in 2005, and the Professional Achievement award from ILHIMA in 2010.

Denise Johnson, MS, RHIA, CPHQ

Denise Johnson is the Vice President, Process Excellence and is responsible for design and standardization of functional operations across service delivery and provide a platform for continuous process improvement in revenue cycle. She formerly served as Vice President, HIM Integrated Services at nThrive with leadership responsibilities for HIM, Clinical Documentation Improvement, Case Management Strategic Sourcing operations. She brings extensive leadership expertise in healthcare operations and consulting. Prior to joining nThrive she worked in both consulting and operation realms. She has served as Consulting Practice Director, Revenue Cycle Services for a National EHR Company and Manager for a national consulting firm; VP of Health Information Services for a national IT and consulting firm. Denise holds a M.S. degree in Health Care Administration from the University of Detroit. She is a member of AHIMA, FHIMA, and HFMA . She is an active RHIA and CPHQ. She has presented at speaking engagements on various topics for AHIMA, state and local ACDIS, HIM and Healthcare Financial Associations.
