SCHIMA | AI Across the Cancer Registry: A Practical Framework for Registrars
Live & Recorded Virtual Event
Overview
Cancer registries face increasing case complexity, growing demands for timely data, and persistent workforce pressures. This session gives Oncology Data Specialists a practical framework for evaluating where AI fits across the registry workflow and where registrar judgment remains essential. We distinguish informatics from AI and organize registry tasks into three categories: deterministic retrieval of documented facts, rule-guided extraction under explicit standards, and trained AI for tasks requiring interpretation. We apply this framework to casefinding, abstraction and coding, quality review, follow-up and recurrence surveillance, and reporting. Throughout, we describe a human-in-the-loop approach built on traceable source evidence, confidence-based review routing, registrar-owned rules, and validation against registrar-adjudicated data. The session concludes with a practical adoption strategy: start with a focused pilot, establish baseline performance, select measures appropriate to the task, and monitor quality over time. Attendees will leave better equipped to assess vendor claims, identify appropriate uses of automation, and plan implementation while preserving registrar oversight and alignment with applicable registry standards.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate deterministic retrieval, rule-guided extraction, and trained AI, and identify appropriate applications and levels of registrar oversight across the cancer registry workflow.
- Describe a human-in-the-loop approach that uses traceable source evidence, registrar-owned rules, and validation to support reliable AI output and alignment with registry standards.
- Apply a practical framework to evaluate vendor claims and plan a focused AI pilot using baseline performance, task-appropriate measures, and ongoing quality monitoring.
