Rita Bowen, MA, RHIA, CHPS, CHPC, SSGB – VP Privacy & Compliance, MRO
The interoperability final rule was introduced in 2020 and enforces considerable compliance obligations on healthcare stakeholders, including providers, EHR vendors and HIEs. Despite the major changes of the information rule, however, most healthcare organizations lag in awareness and preparedness for compliance. The COVID-19 pandemic has further complicated compliance with the final rule, as healthcare leaders report a lack of time for education and implementation amid surges of the virus. This session provides a comprehensive background and overview of the final rule, as well as points out exceptions to the definition of information blocking. Speakers provide guidance specifically for HIM, including tips to collaborate within other departments and ensure long term compliance.
