Melissa Koehler, RHIA, CHDA, CDIP, CCS, CCS-P, AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer
Melissa Koehler is a HIM professional with substantial coding, auditing, and CDI experience. With a career of nearly 25 years in HIM, Melissa has served in various production and leadership roles in several health information disciplines of inpatient/outpatient facility coding including supervisory, auditing, and management roles, clinical documentation improvement, and revenue cycle workflow.
She has volunteered by serving on several committees on the national, state, and local levels including Upper East Tennessee Health Information Management Association (UETHIMA) Secretary/Treasurer and 2017-2018 President, Tennessee Health Information Management Association (THIMA) Nominating and HIM Development Committees, and has been the chair of the Data Analytics & Informatics Committee since 2017. She also represents the state of Tennessee with AHIMA as the Coding Roundtable Coordinator. Involvement at the national level include AHIMA HIM Honor Society Task Force in 2015, Standards for Ethical Coding Taskforce in 2016, and she is currently serving in her third-year term with the Clinical Terminology & Classification Practice Council. She has served as a speaker on various coding and CDI topics at the local, regional, and state levels. On a national scale, she served as a panelist for 2017 AHIMA Convention presentation “Clinical Validation vs. DRG Validation”, and as a keynote speaker for the 2017 AHIMA CDI Summit. Melissa has authored several articles for AHIMA’s CodeWrite publications and co-authored past and upcoming articles published in The Journal of AHIMA.
Melissa completed her Associates of Applied Science in Health Information Technology and graduated Magna Cum Laude at Walter’s State Community College where she received several merit-based scholarships and accolades. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Informatics & Information Management from The College of Saint Scholastica and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Health Informatics from the same institution. She is also a past recipient of AHIMA Foundation’s CSA Leadership Merit scholarship and received an Honorable Mention for AHIMA’s 2018 Roundtable Achievement in Coding Excellence Award.
