This Coding Roundtable will include a brief review of what we as HIM perceive Sepsis is and how it should coded and what to look for when coding. It will also provide insight into the clinical side of Sepsis 3 and how it will effect coding in the future.
Christopher L Averill (Chris), RHIA
Chris Averill serves as the Director of Coding at Parallon Business Performance Group Orange Park and Tampa Shared Service Centers. He oversees all Coding operations for 52 HCA hospitals. His first job for Parallon was Health Information Management Director for St. Lucie Medical Center in Port St Lucie Fl.
Prior to Joining Parallon, Chris worked for a CHS hospital in Tennessee as the lead Inpatient Coder for 4 years and prior to that, he worked all areas in the Health Information management department at St Lucie Medical Center for 9 years. Chris has 12 years of service with the Kansas Army National Guard as an ammunition specialist. Chris has 16 years total with HCA/Parallon and a total of 21 years of experience in HIM/Coding.
He recently received his Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics from Western Governors University. Additionally, Chris enjoys cooking, golf and bowling (he has 2 perfect 300 games).
