Overview

This seminar will provide HIM professionals with alternative and non-traditional approaches to developing their career. We will share real-life examples of HIM professionals who have been able to use their careers in coding, transcription, and chart completion to springboard into the high-demand roles of the future. We will also present the critical educational components required for these new roles, and what skill-sets, both HIM and non-HIM, employers are looking for.

Shawn Wells, BS, RHIT, CHDA

Shawn Wells, BS, RHIT, CHDA, is HIM Data Integrity Manager for University of Utah Health Care, and is an AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer.He manages the Inpatient Auditing, Coder Education, and Data Integrity Units and oversaw several aspects of the transition to ICD-10 including Clinical Documentation, Training and Education, Dual Coding. He is Project Manager on the University’s implementation of Computer-Assisted-Coding, 3M 360 Encompass.

Shawn is President of the Utah Health Information Management Association, served as Treasurer for UHIMA from 2010-2012, and is a member of AHIMA’s Data Analytics Task Force. He has an Associates’ degree in Health Information Technology from Weber State University, and a B.S. in Sociology from Montana State University.
