Overview
Join us for an interactive Student Coffee Chat exploring the world of medical coding and the many career opportunities available within this area of Health Information Management. Coding professionals will share their experiences, discuss how coding knowledge translates from the classroom to the workplace, and provide insight into the skills employers look for when hiring new professionals.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about different coding environments and career pathways, hear what a typical day may look like, and explore how coding continues to evolve alongside technology, artificial intelligence, documentation, and regulatory change.
This informal, conversational session is designed to connect students with professionals working in the field and provide an opportunity to ask questions, gain career insight, and better understand where coding skills can take them.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify career pathways and work environments available to medical coding professionals.
- Describe key skills and competencies employers seek in entry-level coding professionals.
- Explain how coding knowledge and responsibilities translate from academic preparation to professional practice.
- Discuss current trends influencing the coding profession, including technology, artificial intelligence, and evolving documentation practices.
- Identify strategies for preparing for and transitioning into a professional coding role.
