Recognizing the need to better support their patients who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or gender non-conforming, healthcare facilities are training their physicians in gender-affirming treatment, and training patient facing staff in appropriate and respectful language to use when interacting with LGBTQ+ patients and families. Join us for a presentation on how one pediatric facility addressed this challenge, learn of their successes for families and patients and their plans for future operational enhancements and community outreach.

Stevan Hidalgo, MS, RHIA, CHPS
Stevan is the HIM Operations Manager at Children’s Hospital Colorado. He serves on the hospital’s Gender Diversity Committee and AHIMA’s LGBTQ+ Workgroup. Stevan earned a Master of Science in Health Services Administration from Regis University, and maintains his RHIA and CHPS credentials. He has presented “Addressing the Needs of Our Transgender Patient Population,” to the Colorado Hospital Association, and “Caring for Our LGBT Patient Population: Changing Documentation and Workflows” at the 2017 AHIMA Annual Meeting. He has authored “Privacy Challenges to Consider for Pediatric Patient Populations,” and co-authored “Improved Patient Engagement for LGBT Populations,” and “How Inclusive is Your Data? Collection and Workflow Considerations for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Data” for the AHIMA Journal.
