CHIA | HIM and the Golden Wave: Non-Traditional Roles for HIM Professionals

10,000 people are turning 65 years of age everyday in the United States - this "swell" is being called the Golden Wave

10,000 people are turning 65 years of age everyday in the United States – this “swell” is being called the Golden Wave. Independent living, assisted living, memory care communities and in-home care services are already in high demand in California, and many seniors turn to placement or referral specialists for guidance, advocacy and information. But what are these professionals doing with the protected health information? Are they HIPAA compliant, or even knowledgeable of privacy rules? What are the credentials of these professionals as they secure, share and and hopefully shred medical records? The answers may be shocking.

Credentialed HIM professionals are critically needed at various points in the care continuum in order to appropriately, accurately and legally release information to ensure continuity of care. However, there is a lack of barrier to entry as a “placement agent” into the placement industry, thus allowing anyone to secure and handle medical records obtained from geriatric patients.

The presenter will discuss the Golden Wave and how her role as a registered health information administrator (RHIA) and as the owner and operator of CarePatrol, a senior placement company, have collided. She will discuss her education, credentials and experience in the geriatric and health information space. The differences between a referral agency and a placement specialist will be examined, and encounters as a placement specialist and RHIA will be shared, including interactions with the medical community, primarily hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, on behalf of clients.
