AAHIM | AI in Healthcare; Foundations and Trends in Governance

This timely presentation delivers an update about new the new trends arising in relation to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and in healthcare. The context of the presentation is that AI includes Machine Learning and other similar terms/tech but can be presented without too much technical jargon or complex details. This is a dense topic, the author selects about 30 to 40 slides from a 200-slide deck to tailor for the audience, typically an overview of AI governance. But it is possible to dive into more details if desired for a longer presentation.The presentation is intended to impart a large volume of information about the rapidly changing technical environment that is introducing governance concerns in a compact but factually deep presentation with slide content useable by attendees after the presentation as they adopt and train others as they implement AI governance. Mr. McLendon is well known for condensing and simplifying the complex presentation content into easily learnable points with his signature delivery style.Topics such as what are the foundational concepts that health information, privacy officers, security officers, governance and compliance professionals should be aware of. Including what types of AI governance practices and attributes need to be managed. It is important to govern AI from system and data perspectives, by vendor. The presentation also focuses on HIPAA’s role in AI privacy and security along with other forms of governance such as the NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF) for Governance. Issues already arising that are new and to be addressed as AI governance is implemented (which it is only partially in most US healthcare organizations) e.g., ChatGPT does not claim to be HIPAA compliant, but Microsoft Co-pilot claims to be. Kelly McLendon worked with an advanced HIM student, Ms. Falcone, in a practicum environment to build both of our knowledge basis on this subject matter. We learned a lot and have created a 250 question AI governance assessment which is used to draw content from this presentation from.
