2026 MNHIMA Virtual Annual Meeting

Beyond Boundaries: Shaping the Next Era of Health Information Management

Overview

This presentation examines the use of large language models (LLMs) to translate Spanish–English patient portal messages in a multicenter study across U.S. health systems. Findings demonstrate that AI-generated translations are statistically non-inferior to certified human translators for routine communication, while revealing important differences in error patterns and clinical risk. Attendees will explore implications for health information governance, including risk-based routing, quality monitoring, and regulatory compliance under ACA Section 1557. The session emphasizes how AI translation can expand language access and support health equity while maintaining safety, trust, and information quality within digital health communication workflows.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain key information quality concepts—accuracy, consistency, reliability, and fitness for use—in AI translated patient communications.
  • Evaluate the risks of AI translation compared to human interpreters, including compliance with language access regulations.
  • Identify practical governance approaches to manage AI translation while protecting data integrity, accountability, and compliance.
